Why It Is Never Too Late to Take to the Skies

“It doesn't matter how old you are, as an adult you can become a pilot at any age,” says Michelle Smith, co-founder of the Sedona-based flight school Untethered Aviation. As National Aviation Day highlights the accessibility of flight, Smith and partner Michael Wolford argue that the cockpit remains open to anyone with drive.

Why It Is Never Too Late to Take to the Skies

Smith’s own path to aviation began at 49, while she was balancing a career in educational consulting. She suggests that the transition is less about age and more about intellectual curiosity. This perspective aligns with findings published in Neurology International, which indicate that engaging in complex hobbies like flying can improve executive function and memory in older adults. According to the National Institutes of Health, such cognitive challenges are essential for healthy aging, as they help the brain adapt to new environments.

Michael Wolford, who began flying at 17 and became a wingsuit pilot at 60, emphasizes that the discipline required for flight training fosters resilience and confidence. At their Sedona facility, the duo provides a rigorous training ground for students pursuing everything from private certifications to commercial licenses. While Sedona is known for its demanding mountainous terrain, the school aims to demystify the process for career-seekers and hobbyists alike. By combining professional instruction with a focus on personal growth, Untethered Aviation attempts to prove that the dream of flight does not have to remain a childhood memory.
