Veterans Mark Midpoint of 3,700-Mile Great American Rail-Trail Trek

Six veterans traversing the United States by bicycle are scheduled to reach the geographic midpoint of the Great American Rail-Trail on July 3. Their arrival in Battle Creek, Nebraska, serves as a focal point for local celebrations linking the restorative power of outdoor therapy to the nation’s expanding trail infrastructure.

The riders, representing various branches of the U.S. military, departed Washington, D.C., on May 21. Their journey, organized through a partnership between Rails to Trails Conservancy (RTC) and the outdoor therapy nonprofit Warrior Expeditions, highlights the transition from service to civilian life. The expedition route spans 3,700 miles, utilizing the Cowboy Trail and other segments of the cross-country network to connect communities across the Midwest.

Upon reaching Nebraska, the group will participate in local events, including a community ride into Ta-Ha-Zouka Park and Norfolk’s annual Freedom Fest. These gatherings emphasize the role of trails in public health and economic development. The Great American Rail-Trail is currently 56% complete, with projections suggesting the fully realized path could generate over $229 million in annual economic impact. As Congress debates future transportation funding, the project stands as a practical example of the necessity for sustained investment in non-motorized infrastructure.

The team includes combat veterans Justin Abramo, Jayson Goetz, Winston Hall, Mary Montigny, Patrick Smith, and Mitchell Villafania. Their participation underscores the broader mission of RTC, which has advocated for the development of multiuse trail networks since its founding in 1986. With over 42,500 miles of trails now established nationwide, the organization continues to lobby for federal support to bridge remaining gaps in the cross-country route.
