The prospective, observational study conducted in Italy tracked adult consumers using ambroxol or bromhexine over a seven-day period. By utilizing validated tools like the Cough Severity Diary and the Leicester Cough Questionnaire, researchers identified that recovery involves a rapid return to normalcy rather than a gradual fading of symptoms. Patients reported improvements in daily functioning from the very first dose, allowing for a faster restoration of routines.
Social and physical recovery timelines were particularly notable. Within 72 hours, participants experienced a clinically meaningful reduction in the social impact of their cough, facilitating easier communication and interaction. Sleep quality also saw a sharp recovery; after just 48 hours, the percentage of patients struggling with sleep disruption dropped by more than 50% across categories of falling asleep, staying asleep, and daytime tiredness. Milena Leone, Global Brand General Manager at Opella, noted that these findings validate the importance of timely care in helping individuals move past the limitations of acute illness and resume their lives with greater speed.
