Beijing Hosts ICBS 2026 as Global Scholars Debate AI and Discovery

Tsinghua University president Li Luming opened the proceedings by highlighting the university's push to integrate artificial intelligence into its core research infrastructure. He argued that elite institutions must prioritize independent talent cultivation and original innovation to push the boundaries of human knowledge. The conference serves as a platform for this strategy, showcasing how increased investment and policy support in China are intended to foster a new generation of scientists.

ICBS President Shing-Tung Yau reinforced this perspective, cautioning that while AI accelerates mathematical deduction, it remains a tool rather than a substitute for human intuition. He emphasized that the most significant scientific breakthroughs occur at the intersection of disciplines, requiring researchers to move into uncharted territory. To mark these efforts, the congress presented the inaugural ICBS Medal to nine scientists, including Claire Voisin and Feng Zhang, for their work across mathematics, physics, and engineering. Additionally, the Frontiers of Science Awards recognized 111 high-impact research papers, with Chinese institutions accounting for 19 of the honored studies in fields ranging from quantum theory to large-scale AI models.
