ITC Clears Voltage Energy in Patent Dispute Over Trunk Bus Technology

The U.S. International Trade Commission has issued a final ruling confirming that Voltage Energy’s LYNX PLUS trunk bus solutions do not infringe on patents held by Shoals Technologies Group. This decision effectively blocks a second attempt by Shoals to exclude the North Carolina-based company from the domestic solar energy market.

ITC Clears Voltage Energy in Patent Dispute Over Trunk Bus Technology

The commission’s determination arrives after a prolonged legal campaign initiated by Shoals, which previously failed in an earlier 2023 investigation. Voltage Energy CEO Li Wang characterized the outcome as a milestone for fair competition, asserting that the company developed its technology independently. The dispute centered on patents issued to Shoals in June 2024, which were subsequently leveraged in both an ITC case and a district court complaint filed in early 2025.

Legal friction between the two firms intensified during recent district court proceedings, where a judge found that Shoals violated an agreement regarding the involvement of its counsel in the patent acquisition process. Voltage Energy maintained that its products were engineered prior to the issuance of the contested patents. While additional litigation remains pending, the ITC’s latest confirmation allows solar developers and engineering firms nationwide to continue utilizing Voltage Energy’s infrastructure components without the threat of an import or sales ban.
