Northumbria Healthcare Secures Critical Infrastructure with £1m Upgrade

Managing health services across 2,500 square miles requires absolute digital reliability, yet Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust faced mounting risks from aging, fragmented power systems. A new £1 million modernization project has now standardized the Trust’s UPS infrastructure, replacing legacy hardware with a centralized, AI-monitored network to guarantee uninterrupted patient care.

The Trust, which serves over 500,000 residents in Northumberland and North Tyneside, relied on a patchwork of legacy uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units. This lack of standardization hindered maintenance and created blind spots in reporting. By partnering with Schneider Electric, alongside RMD and XMA, the organization deployed the EcoStruxure platform across 175 nodes. This digital overhaul now provides real-time visibility into power health, allowing the Trust to shift from reactive repairs to a proactive lifecycle management model.

Mathew Burns, the Trust’s Operational Infrastructure Manager, noted that the investment was essential to underpin clinical systems, electronic patient records, and CCTV. Beyond achieving 100% uptime, the project establishes a scalable foundation for future data center consolidation. With a five-year service agreement now in place, the Trust can accurately forecast budget requirements for hardware refreshes, ensuring that the technology supporting its “outstanding” rated clinical services remains resilient against potential failures.
