The funding will support the design and construction of a new public kayak and canoe launch, alongside a greenway in Vigo County. The project seeks to bridge the gap between the area’s 19th-century history as a War of 1812 frontier outpost and modern recreational needs. According to Riverfront Development Director Lori Danielson, the grant acts as a catalyst for long-term efforts to provide safe, meaningful access to the water for the Terre Haute community.
Riverscape President Bryan Horsman emphasized that the initiative is designed to transcend local county lines, aiming for a unified, regional river experience. Landscape architect Luke Waltz of Lowland Workshop is tasked with integrating the site's historical significance into the new design. The project falls under the Keep Communities Flowing program, which focuses on environmental stewardship and expanding water-based recreation. Indiana American Water President Barry Suits noted that the development serves to strengthen the community's bond with its natural resources, balancing historical preservation with updated infrastructure.
