Boston Children’s Museum Opens Permanent STEAM Construction Exhibit

Starting June 25, 2026, the Boston Children's Museum invites families to explore the mechanics of the built environment through its new permanent exhibit, Dream it! Build it! The installation transforms complex urban planning and engineering concepts into hands-on play, aiming to broaden access to technical career pathways for young visitors.

The exhibit shifts the focus from passive observation to active construction, allowing children to engage with scaffolding, digital urban design, and sustainable architecture. By integrating real tools and collaborative problem-solving, the space emphasizes the creative side of engineering. Museum leadership highlighted the initiative as a deliberate effort to reach children early, particularly girls and students of color, who remain statistically underrepresented in architecture and construction fields.

To ensure the exhibit reflects diverse perspectives, the museum collaborated with local partners including YouthBuild Boston, Artists for Humanity, and Minuteman High School. Visitors can participate in thematic zones such as The Big Build, where they construct large-scale structures, or the Design Studio, which focuses on spatial planning. Carole Charnow, President and CEO of the museum, noted that the project serves as an early entry point to the construction workforce pipeline, aiming to make technical careers feel both attainable and rewarding for children from all backgrounds.
