Suburban Propane Debuts Renewable Energy Charging at NASCAR San Diego

During the NASCAR race weekend at Naval Base Coronado, Suburban Propane deployed a novel mobile charging solution to power electric vehicles. By using renewable propane-fueled generators to feed battery storage systems, the partnership with ABB and Kempower demonstrated a path for off-grid, high-demand charging in temporary locations.

The demonstration, held from June 19–21, 2026, utilized renewable propane—a fuel derived from plant oils and animal fats—to provide a lower-carbon alternative to traditional diesel generators. This setup powered Kempower DC fast chargers via ABB distribution equipment, effectively bypassing the need for permanent grid infrastructure. The project highlights a growing industry focus on flexible, portable energy solutions for fleet electrification and emergency response.

Nandini Sankara, Vice President of Marketing and Brand Strategy at Suburban Propane, stated that the initiative proves how renewable propane can complement emerging technologies by providing reliable power in specific, on-demand environments. Chris Shigas, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at ABB, noted that diversifying generation sources is essential to meeting the nation’s expanding energy demands. As the official propane partner of NASCAR, Suburban Propane intends to use this successful San Diego activation as a blueprint for future sustainability efforts both on and off the track.
