Red Cross recruits Looney Tunes to tackle summer blood shortages

As summer festivities and travel plans peak, the American Red Cross is turning to Bugs Bunny and friends to address a worrying 20% decline in critical blood supplies. Starting June 29, donors who roll up a sleeve at participating locations will receive a limited-edition Looney Tunes T-shirt.

The partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery aims to stabilize the national blood supply during a period typically marked by low turnout. Darren Irby, executive director of national brand partnerships for the Red Cross, noted that the summer months present unique collection challenges, compounded this year by the intensity of national anniversary celebrations. The organization is particularly struggling to maintain adequate stocks of type O blood and platelets, both of which remain essential for trauma care, surgeries, and ongoing cancer treatments.

To participate, donors can schedule appointments via the Red Cross Blood Donor App, the organization’s website, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS. Prospective donors must generally be at least 17 years old—or 16 with parental consent—and meet specific health and weight requirements. The Red Cross encourages users to utilize the RapidPass system to complete health questionnaires in advance, streamlining the check-in process on the day of donation.
