University Hospital Sets National Standard for Field Transfusions

Seconds determine survival when trauma strikes, a reality that forced Newark’s University Hospital to rethink where life-saving blood is administered. By securing the first-ever AABB accreditation for emergency prehospital transfusions, the institution has formalized a practice that brings hospital-grade care directly to the scene of an injury.

The accreditation validates the hospital’s rigorous protocols for blood storage, transport, and administration outside traditional clinical walls. For patients facing rapid blood loss, this shift in the care model aims to curb the onset of shock long before they reach an operating room. The standards cover everything from personnel qualifications to the complex traceability of blood products, ensuring that field care meets the same safety benchmarks as a stationary blood bank.

Evidence of the program's impact emerged on its very first day of operation. When a motorcyclist suffered severe trauma in a nearby collision, emergency teams were prepared with a blood supply already on board. They administered a transfusion within nine minutes of the crash, a window of intervention credited with saving the patient’s life. According to AABB CEO Debra BenAvram, this proactive approach to trauma care represents a critical advancement in health care, pushing the boundaries of where and when life-saving treatments can be deployed.
