Shanghai Film Festival Debuts AI BACKLOT Production Initiative

The 28th Shanghai International Film Festival has officially integrated artificial intelligence into professional production through its new AI BACKLOT program. By pairing veteran filmmakers with AIGC creators, the initiative moves beyond theoretical discussion to deliver four original short films developed entirely through human-AI collaboration.

Launched in partnership with MiniMax, the project drew nearly 500 applicants from seven countries. Four selected teams utilized a 1+1 model to navigate complex production challenges, including character development and budgeting. The resulting films—Lightcone, N.I., Tri-Head, and Bicycle Kids—were unveiled alongside an industry observation report from the Communication University of China, which documents the specific prompts and storyboards used throughout the creative process.

During the June 14 premiere at the Crowne Plaza Shanghai, industry leaders emphasized that these tools serve to augment rather than replace human intuition. Director Huang Jianxin, who spearheaded the initiative, noted that while AI technology iterates rapidly, the core of cinematic art remains tethered to human aesthetic judgment and storytelling vision. To further demystify the workflow, the festival hosted a two-day public exhibition at the Shanghai Film Art Center, allowing creators to test AI tools and observe the technical logs behind the hybrid production model.
