The four-day trek, which concluded on June 10, saw automotive professionals and industry volunteers navigate the route from the American Heartland to the West Coast. The initiative, led by journalist Nik Miles in partnership with the nonprofit Animal Rescue Rigs, highlights the practical application of long-distance zero-emissions travel for animal logistics. Chris Paukert, a senior manager at Hyundai Motor America, joined the convoy as both a driver and a rescue volunteer, noting that the IONIQ 9’s quiet cabin and interior space provided a calming environment for animals transitioning to adoptive families.
Since its inception in 2022, Operation Frodo has successfully rehomed 106 dogs, evolving from a single-dog rescue into a nationwide movement. Hyundai’s participation included a $6,000 donation to cover logistics for the mission, which was supported by organizations including the Basset and Beagle Rescue of the Heartland and Cascade Beagle Rescue. By utilizing the 2026 IONIQ 9 Calligraphy, the team aimed to demonstrate that modern electric SUVs can reliably handle intensive, multi-state transport efforts while maintaining the comfort necessary for shelter animals.
