PleoPharma Targets Cannabis Withdrawal With New Phase 2 Data

With no FDA-approved therapies currently available for cannabis use disorder, PleoPharma is turning to the 88th Annual Scientific Meeting of the College on Problems of Drug Dependence in Portland to unveil fresh clinical findings on its investigational oral treatment, PP-01, and the lived experience of patient withdrawal.

The company is presenting two distinct posters on June 15 that bridge the gap between patient-reported burdens and objective clinical metrics. The first, led by Ashley Slagle, examines the severity and rapid onset of withdrawal symptoms through a qualitative study of 15 adults, highlighting the significant hurdles patients face when attempting to reduce or cease cannabis use.

The second presentation details results from the Phase 2 CAN-002 clinical trial. Data shows that the investigational drug PP-01 achieved a statistically significant 43% reduction in irritability—a key symptom of withdrawal—compared to a placebo (P = 0.01) during the second through fifth days of the study. Ginger Constantine, CEO of PleoPharma, noted that these findings reinforce the drug's potential as a first-in-class treatment. PP-01 is designed to address neurotransmitter dysregulation in the mesolimbic reward pathway and is currently advancing toward further clinical development.
