Ecopetrol Seals Six-Year Labor Deal with Oil Workers Union

After more than 990 sessions of direct negotiation, Colombia’s state-controlled energy giant Ecopetrol has finalized a new collective bargaining agreement with the Oil Workers Union (USO). The deal, which spans six years starting January 1, 2026, marks the conclusion of a complex labor dispute involving the country’s largest employer.

The agreement covers not only the majority union but also includes 66 separate final settlements reached with other participating labor organizations. According to company statements, the negotiations focused on improving health and educational benefits, while cementing new commitments to workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion. These terms aim to balance employee welfare with the firm’s broader mandates for operational efficiency and cost discipline.

Management and union representatives are now preparing to formalize the filings with the Ministry of Labor. Following the submission, the parties plan to launch a nationwide tour to present the specifics of the agreement to the company’s 19,000-strong workforce. Ecopetrol, which maintains a dominant role in Colombia’s hydrocarbon production and regional energy infrastructure, characterized the protracted negotiation period as an exercise in mutual respect and collaborative engagement.
