The new collection site, located within the Healthy Food Center at AHN Jefferson, operates three days a week to receive donations. Once collected, the milk is transported to the Mid-Atlantic Mother's Milk Bank in Bellevue for rigorous testing and pasteurization, ensuring it meets FDA and state safety standards before distribution to neonatal intensive care units or families at home. This facility represents a strategic expansion of existing AHN infrastructure, which already includes a storage hub at AHN Suburban and donor screening services at AHN West Penn.
Demand for "bridge milk"—the supplement provided while a mother’s own supply develops—has surged as neonatal medicine advances. While most donations support infants with cardiac or gastrointestinal challenges, approximately 15% to 20% now serve outpatient infants with specific medical needs. According to Denise O'Connor, executive director of the milk bank, the partnership aims to lower barriers to donation and address the growing necessity for human milk in both hospital and home settings. Supported by the Jefferson Regional Foundation and Highmark Foundation, the initiative draws on clinical research suggesting that late preterm infants fed donor milk often face shorter hospital stays and higher rates of exclusive breastfeeding after discharge.
