The annual study, compiled by Piper Sandler & Co. using 2025 financial data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, evaluated 300 of the nation's largest publicly traded banks. The assessment focused on four core pillars: return on average tangible common equity, return on average total assets, the ratio of tangible common equity to tangible assets, and the level of nonperforming assets relative to total loans. Beyond its top-tier overall ranking, Columbia also claimed the number one position for asset quality and secured a place among the top three for return on average assets.
Clint Stein, CEO of Columbia Banking System, attributed the performance to a disciplined focus on financial strength and customer service. The achievement adds to a series of recent accolades for the regional bank, which operates across nine western states. Following recognition from Forbes, TIME, and Global Finance earlier this year, this latest distinction highlights the firm's transition from a consistent contender to the leading performer in its asset class.
