The complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington alleges that Coastal Financial failed to adequately monitor credit quality within its CCBX segment. According to the filing, the company assured investors of disciplined growth while failing to detect the underlying risks of a single partner relationship. This oversight culminated in a $68.8 million credit expense, which contributed to a $42.1 million net loss in the second quarter of 2026 and erased roughly $470 million in market capitalization.
Legal counsel Joseph E. Levi argues that the core of the dispute lies in whether Coastal’s internal protections actually functioned as described. While the company touted near-complete indemnification against credit risk, plaintiffs contend these safeguards were overstated, leaving the firm exposed to severe deterioration in partner loan portfolios. The lawsuit seeks to hold the company accountable for allegedly false statements regarding its risk management infrastructure, which purportedly grew to represent one-third of the company's staff by mid-2025 despite the subsequent failures.
