The latest Consumer Price Index report, showing a 3.6% annual increase through September, has upended expectations for the Federal Reserve’s upcoming meeting. While analysts at TD Securities argue that the central bank is unlikely to hike rates just one week before the 2026 midterm elections, the strength of the data suggests that inflationary pressures are becoming deeply embedded in the economy.
Ryan McKay, Director of Commodity Strategy at TD Securities, notes that speculative fund managers are liquidating long positions, creating a systematic drag on prices. Despite this, he expects the $4,000 an ounce mark to hold, bolstered by robust central bank demand and consistent ETF inflows. This sentiment is echoed by Alex Kuptsikevich of FxPro, who sees gold trapped in a narrow range between $4,050 and $4,200, squeezed by rising Treasury yields and a strengthening dollar.
The outlook remains volatile as markets await comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group meetings in Bangkok. Jeffrey Roach of LPL Financial warns that the path to price stability is becoming more difficult, leaving the Fed in a precarious position. Investors are now forced to navigate the tension between defending the central bank's inflation-fighting credibility and the political optics of tightening policy on the eve of a national election.
