D.O. Cava Launches Search for U.S. Sommelier Champion

The D.O. Cava regulatory board is scouting for the top wine professional in the United States to represent its highest quality classifications. Held at SommCon in San Diego, the upcoming competition will pit sommeliers against one another in a rigorous test of technical knowledge, blind tasting, and service precision.

Candidates will focus specifically on Cava de Guarda Superior, the denomination’s premium tier comprising Reserva, Gran Reserva, and Paraje Calificado wines. These selections require 100% organic grapes and extensive aging, with Paraje Calificado wines demanding a minimum of 36 months in the cellar and fruit sourced from exceptional, specific vineyard sites.

The competition begins with a 30-minute blind tasting exam to narrow the field to four finalists. These remaining contenders will then transition to a live service round, where they must demonstrate their ability to translate complex production data into actionable recommendations for guests. Judges will evaluate how effectively each participant explains the nuances of vineyard character and regional origin to enhance a dining experience. By pairing professional development with high-stakes scrutiny, the D.O. Cava aims to solidify the role of these premium sparkling wines in top-tier American wine programs.
