Permian Producers Navigate Gas Price Volatility Ahead of Earnings

After enduring a record 90-day stretch where Waha Hub natural gas prices plummeted into negative territory, Permian Basin producers are entering third-quarter earnings with a mixed outlook. While regional constraints continue to pressure drilling activity, several major players have managed to post record results by leveraging hedges and operational shifts.

Permian Producers Navigate Gas Price Volatility Ahead of Earnings

Permian Resources Corporation serves as a primary example of navigating this turbulent environment. Despite the Waha Hub averaging negative $3.14 during the second quarter, the company netted 38 cents per thousand cubic feet by curtailing high gas-to-oil ratio wells and utilizing strategic hedges. This agility helped drive a record $751 million in adjusted free cash flow, prompting management to raise full-year oil production guidance to 199,000 barrels per day.

Infrastructure and service companies are also recalibrating. Kinetik Holdings reported record adjusted EBITDA of $280.8 million, bolstered by optimized natural gas liquids recovery, even as regional producers shuttered roughly 250 million cubic feet of daily capacity. Meanwhile, Kodiak Gas Services is aggressively pivoting toward the power sector, committing significant capital to gas turbine acquisitions for data centers, despite burning through $87.5 million in free cash flow during the quarter.

Texas Pacific Land is capitalizing on the intersection of energy and infrastructure, securing agreements for Chevron’s Project Kilby. This move toward servicing data center power needs mirrors the sector's broader attempt to diversify revenue streams away from raw commodity extraction. Further north, Chord Energy has focused on technical efficiency, drilling the Williston Basin’s deepest well at 33,810 feet, though it has lowered its second-half price assumptions to $75 WTI, reflecting a cautious stance on the broader market recovery.
