Gold Stumbles as Dollar Strength and Treasury Yields Mount Pressure

Gold prices are struggling to sustain early gains, retreating toward $4,156 an ounce as a surging U.S. dollar and elevated Treasury yields create a formidable barrier for the precious metal ahead of this week’s critical Consumer Price Index report.

Gold Stumbles as Dollar Strength and Treasury Yields Mount Pressure

The market’s initial optimism, which saw gold briefly climb above $4,200 during the Asian session, has evaporated under the weight of persistent inflation concerns and a U.S. Dollar Index holding near an 18-month high. Investors are bracing for Wednesday’s inflation data, which will likely dictate the Federal Reserve's path forward. With interest rate futures pricing in an 85% probability of a rate hike by December, the divergence between slowing employment growth and rising inflation expectations continues to stifle bullish momentum.

Simon-Peter Massabni, Head of Business Development at XS.com, notes that gold sits at a pivotal technical juncture. While safe-haven demand remains present due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and concerns over U.S. fiscal sustainability, the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets has ballooned. The 10-year Treasury yield remains well above 5%, a level unseen in nearly two decades, as investors demand higher premiums for long-term government debt amid a sovereign debt load exceeding $40 trillion.

Despite the immediate headwinds, the underlying appetite for gold persists. Global gold-backed exchange-traded funds recorded inflows of approximately $10 billion in September, pushing holdings to a record 4,256 tonnes. Whether this institutional interest can override the current bearish technical trend will depend on whether upcoming inflation prints force a shift in monetary policy expectations. Until then, gold remains trapped in a volatile range, with immediate support tested at $4,155 an ounce.
