Warren Wilson College Lands Record $11 Million Gift for Science Hub

An anonymous $11 million donation is set to overhaul laboratory facilities at Warren Wilson College, marking the largest financial windfall in the institution's history. The capital infusion targets the expansion of undergraduate research capabilities, specifically focusing on climate, ecological, and health science programs within the western North Carolina campus.

The initiative, titled Advancing Science in Action for the Common Good, focuses on renovating three existing campus buildings rather than starting from scratch. By repurposing current infrastructure, the college intends to implement energy-efficient upgrades while installing high-end instrumentation previously unavailable to undergraduates. Planned additions include specialized anatomy and physiology labs, a Geographic Information Systems center, and expanded forestry facilities at the Center for Working Lands.

Nearly half of the student body currently pursues STEM-related paths, a demographic that will see immediate impacts as the college finalizes its new Health Sciences program. President Damián J. Fernández noted that the funding allows the school to push its hands-on education model further, granting undergraduates access to research tools typically reserved for graduate-level study. Beyond immediate renovations, the gift establishes an endowed fund to ensure the college keeps pace with future technological shifts in scientific field research.
