Syngenta Sued Over Alleged Cancer Risks Linked to Atrazine Herbicide

After three decades of mixing and spraying herbicides in Los Angeles County, Apostolos Panayiotou has launched a lawsuit against Syngenta, alleging the chemical giant concealed cancer risks associated with atrazine. The legal action centers on non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a diagnosis Panayiotou attributes to his routine professional exposure to the company's products.

Syngenta Sued Over Alleged Cancer Risks Linked to Atrazine Herbicide

The complaint, filed by the firm Wisner Baum, argues that Syngenta failed to provide adequate warnings in its training, sales, and promotional materials, even while maintaining product labels approved by the EPA. Attorneys representing Panayiotou contend that the company possessed, yet suppressed, evidence linking atrazine to immune system suppression and lymphoma. This case follows a 2025 assessment by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which classified the herbicide as "probably carcinogenic to humans."

Beyond failure to warn, the lawsuit alleges design defects, suggesting that alternative formulations could have mitigated health risks. The legal team further accuses the manufacturer of engaging in a long-standing campaign to undermine scientific research and discredit independent scientists. Panayiotou, who claims he would have avoided the products had he been properly informed, is now seeking compensatory and punitive damages for medical expenses and lost income caused by his condition.
