Brent Crude Hits $93 as Iran Sanctions Stoking Supply Fears

Oil prices surged to a three-week high on Thursday, with Brent Crude climbing to $93.48 per barrel as U.S.-Iran diplomatic prospects evaporated. The rally follows President Donald Trump’s pledge to launch an unprecedented economic pressure campaign against Tehran, warning that any nation facilitating Iranian trade will face severe financial consequences.

The rally, marking five consecutive days of gains, reflects growing anxiety over the stability of Middle Eastern supply chains. West Texas Intermediate followed the trend, crossing the $85 threshold to trade at $86.12. ING commodities strategists Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey noted that the rhetoric signals a definitive escalation in Washington's strategy to isolate Iran, effectively tightening the enforcement of existing sanctions.

Despite the climb in futures, some analysts argue the market is misreading the underlying fragility of the sector. Saxo Bank’s Ole Hansen pointed out that current pricing does not reflect the risk of a prolonged disruption at the world’s primary oil chokepoints. While crude remains available, the true pressure point has shifted downstream. The U.S. diesel crack spread hit a historic triple-digit milestone this week, briefly touching $102 per barrel before settling near $100, highlighting a significant imbalance in refined fuel availability.
