According to a Stanford Energy report, reliance on foreign enrichment, particularly from sources linked to Russia, introduces significant security risks and inflationary pressure on reactor operations. The World Nuclear Association projects global uranium demand will climb 28 percent by 2030, a scramble for resources that finds the U.S. lagging behind aggressive Chinese and Russian investments in Africa and Central Asia.
American utilities face a looming deficit, requiring 360 million pounds of uranium over the next decade to maintain existing grid operations, yet only 174 million pounds are currently secured under long-term contracts. To close this 186-million-pound gap, the government is pursuing domestic production and advanced fuel strategies. Recent efforts include the launch of a major in-situ recovery site in South Texas and federal initiatives to recycle spent nuclear fuel, which could theoretically boost resource utilization by 95 percent. Additionally, officials are in advanced negotiations to convert 50 tons of Cold War-era weapons-grade plutonium into commercial reactor fuel. Jacob DeWitte, CEO of the startup Oklo, noted that securing these alternative supplies is essential to overcoming the current choke points that hinder the expansion of next-generation reactor capacity.
